About The Project

A Collective have been commissioned to create a large six metre wide artwork for The Works, a new industrial park being developed on the site of the former gasworks on Factory Lane in Croydon.

The artwork will be installed near the entrance and will be visible from the road; it will recognise and remember the gas holders that have been part of our Croydon skyline since 1860.

For many Croydon residents, the gas holders are part of our memories – visible from the Purley Way, the bypass, the tramline, central Croydon and our friends’ back gardens – a reference point by which we could orient ourselves: if you could see the gas holders, you were nearly home.

For others, a part of the horizon to simply gaze at absent-mindedly, looking at how the criss-cross mesh of shapes intersected the sky: structures not just looked at, but looked through.

We are co-creating the design with members of our Autistic Youth Hub and we’d love Croydon residents to influence it too, by suggesting shapes and words that you feel we should consider for the final design.
