During June and July 2025, we invited Croydon residents to make submissions in the form of shapes and words, inspired by seeing the sky through the gas holders. We said that it could be from memory or from the images in our inspiration gallery.

Shape creation

Residents could submit a line drawing of a 3 or 4-sided shape using our bespoke drawing tool. It could have curves or be made up of straight lines. We received a number of lovely submissions that will form part of the final artwork design.

Word suggestions

Residents could also submit a word to our public word cloud, or upvote other suggestions. Words could be abstract, descriptive, or literal, and would inform the creation of a short poem as part of the artwork.

The artwork is now in progress and we anticipate it will be installed by the end of 2025.
